Overview
The Department of Health is seeking to appoint two (2) dedicated and hardworking Cleaners to join the Support Directorate at Wits Oral Health Centre. This opportunity is ideal for individuals who are passionate about maintaining cleanliness and hygiene within a healthcare environment and who understand the importance of infection prevention and patient safety.
The successful candidates will play a vital role in ensuring that both clinical and non-clinical areas remain clean, hygienic, and compliant with health and safety standards. Maintaining a clean healthcare facility is essential for infection control, patient well-being, and overall operational efficiency.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Grade 12 certificate.
- A minimum of two (2) years’ experience working as a Cleaner in a health facility or healthcare environment.
Required Competencies and Knowledge

- Good verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to read and write effectively.
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS).
- Knowledge of Infection Prevention and Control (IPC).
- Understanding of waste management processes.
- Knowledge of Batho Pele Principles.
- Awareness of patient rights.
- Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
- Ability to work effectively in a team.
- Ability to work under pressure in a busy healthcare setting.
Key Responsibilities
The appointed Cleaners will be responsible for maintaining high standards of cleanliness and hygiene across designated areas within the Wits Oral Health Centre. Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Cleaning floors, windows, walls, basins, mirrors, kitchens, urinals, and bathrooms.
- Dusting, polishing, scrubbing, stripping, and disinfecting clinical and non-clinical areas.
- Ensuring all areas within the institution are kept hygienic and compliant with health standards.
- Preventing cross-contamination by following proper cleaning protocols.
- Removing spillages promptly to prevent falls and injuries.
- Using correct cleaning chemicals in appropriate dilutions according to Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) guidelines.
- Performing routine general cleaning tasks in line with the Ideal Hospital Framework.
- Collecting, separating, and disposing of waste according to designated categories.
- Cleaning and maintaining cleaning tools and equipment.
- Reporting faulty equipment and incidents within allocated areas.
