Dis-Chem Pharmacies KZN Security Stores is currently seeking dedicated and professional Security Guards to join its KwaZulu-Natal operations. This role is essential in ensuring a safe, secure, and orderly environment across Dis-Chem retail and warehouse locations in the region.
Job Overview
The successful candidates will be responsible for rendering security services in accordance with the Private Security Industry Regulations Act 56 of 2001, as amended. The primary purpose of the role is to safeguard Dis-Chem’s assets, property, staff, and customers by maintaining a visible security presence, identifying potential risks, responding to incidents, and enforcing company policies and legal requirements.
Security Guards will operate in line with Dis-Chem’s standard operating procedures and industry best practices, contributing to a secure environment that supports smooth retail operations and positive customer experiences.
Key Responsibilities
General Security Duties

Maintain a high level of alertness and awareness of surroundings at all times

Identify, deter, and respond appropriately to suspicious or unlawful activities

Act within the legal authority of the private security industry and company policies

Ensure continuous protection of people, property, and assets
Patrol and Surveillance
-
Conduct regular and random patrols of premises to ensure visibility and risk reduction
-
Monitor alarm systems, CCTV cameras, and emergency equipment
-
Perform after-hours surveillance when required, including night shifts and lone duties
Access Control

Control and monitor access points for staff, customers, suppliers, and visitors

Verify authorization for entry of vehicles and pedestrians

Conduct personnel and vehicle searches in accordance with Dis-Chem standards

Perform daily frisking and security checks
Incident Management and Reporting

Investigate and report signs of damage, theft, or unlawful entry

Document incidents accurately in occurrence books and registers

Submit detailed written and verbal reports to management as required

Contact law enforcement or emergency services when legally necessary
Customer and Staff Interaction

Maintain a professional, courteous, and approachable demeanor

Provide assistance to customers, staff, and visitors when needed

Support a customer-focused environment while enforcing security rules

Practice positive customer service relations with internal and external stakeholders
Operational Support

Assist with opening and closing procedures of stores or facilities

Ensure doors, windows, and access points are secured at the end of each day

Confirm water taps and utilities are properly shut off where applicable

Supervise refuse removal and goods handling according to company standards

Cancel staff purchases and verify declared goods
Emergency Response

Assist during emergency situations such as evacuations, medical incidents, or fires

Maintain order at assembly points and prevent panic or disorder

Alert first responders, managers, or medical personnel promptly

Provide clear directions and decisive action to protect lives and property
Preventative Security Measures

Enforce rules and regulations to prevent criminal activity before it occurs

Offer ongoing safety advice and security awareness to staff

Remain vigilant to potential security breaches and respond promptly

Take accurate notes of daily activities and unusual occurrences
Minimum Requirements
Essential Qualifications and Experience
-
Grade 12 (Matric) or Senior Certificate
-
Grade C PSIRA accreditation
-
PSIRA registration in good standing
-
Minimum of 3 years’ general experience in a retail environment such as shopping malls or warehouses

Ability to read, write, and speak English fluently
Advantageous Experience

At least 1 year of previous experience in a similar security role

Knowledge of additional languages
Required Competencies

Strong knowledge of PSIRA regulations and compliance

Understanding of fire safety, emergency response, and occupational health and safety

High level of integrity, reliability, and professionalism

Ability to remain calm and respond correctly under pressure

Good observation, decision-making, and reporting skills

Physical ability to perform patrols and security checks
Special Conditions of Employment

Must be a South African citizen

Clear criminal and credit record (MIE verification required)

Valid driver’s license, own reliable transport, and PDP when deployed as a driver

Willingness to work shifts, weekends, public holidays, and after-hours when required
