Position Overview

Dis-Chem Pharmacies is seeking a Receiving Clerk for its Overport store in Berea, KwaZulu-Natal. This permanent position plays a vital role in ensuring that stock entering the store is received, checked, and processed accurately and efficiently in line with Dis-Chem’s standard operating procedures (SOPs).

The Receiving Clerk is responsible for maintaining stock integrity from the point of delivery through to storage or movement to the sales floor. This role supports store operations by ensuring that goods are accounted for correctly, discrepancies are resolved promptly, and receiving areas remain secure and well-organised.


Key Responsibilities
Stock Receiving and Verification
  • Accurately receive, scan, and capture all physical stock delivered to the store
  • Verify deliveries against invoices to ensure accuracy in quantity, product variant, and condition
  • Ensure that goods received match the documentation provided by suppliers and warehouses
  • Process all deliveries in accordance with company policies and receiving SOPs
Documentation and Administration
  • Receive warehouse goods and invoices and ensure all paperwork is complete and accurate
  • Capture stock receipts correctly on the system within required timeframes
  • Complete credit notes for rejected, unordered, or damaged stock in line with procedures
  • Assist the Receiving Manager with warehouse claims by preparing and logging claims on the relevant system
Returns and Claims Handling
  • Return damaged, incorrect, or unordered goods promptly
  • Process supplier returns in full compliance with Dis-Chem SOPs
  • Ensure all claims are accurately documented and submitted
Stock Flow and Control
  • Maintain a smooth and efficient flow of stock through the receiving area
  • Ensure deliveries are processed on the same day and sent to the shop floor without unnecessary delays
  • Assist in managing high-risk and sensitive stock categories
  • Support the effective rotation of stock where required
Housekeeping and Physical Controls
  • Maintain physical security controls in the receiving and storeroom areas
  • Ensure storerooms are kept clean, organised, and compliant with company standards
  • Follow safety procedures when handling and moving stock
Team Support
  • Work closely with store management, suppliers, warehouse personnel, and staff
  • Communicate effectively regarding discrepancies, delays, or issues
  • Support overall store operations through teamwork and cooperation

Minimum Requirements
Essential Qualifications
  • Grade 12 / Matric
  • Basic computer literacy
  • Sound numerical and counting skills
  • Willingness and availability to work retail hours, including weekends and public holidays
Advantageous Experience
  • Previous experience in a receiving, retail, or FMCG environment
  • Familiarity with store-based stock receiving processes

Required Skills and Competencies
Essential Competencies
  • Knowledge of receiving procedures and basic administration
  • Strong command of the English language (spoken and written)
  • Ability to interact professionally with suppliers, representatives, management, and colleagues
  • Good analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Effective time management and organisational abilities
  • Physically fit and capable of lifting and moving boxes exceeding 20kg
Advantageous Competencies
  • Ability to communicate in more than one language
  • Experience using stock rotation systems

Special Conditions of Employment
  • Willing and able to work retail hours as required by store operations
  • Physically fit to lift and move heavy stock items (+20kg)
  • Reliable transport and/or residence within close proximity to the store
  • South African citizenship
  • Clear criminal and credit records

Working Environment

This role is based primarily in the store’s receiving and storeroom areas and involves regular interaction with delivery personnel, suppliers, and internal staff. The Receiving Clerk must be comfortable working in a fast-paced retail environment while maintaining high levels of accuracy and attention to detail.
