Position Overview

A hospital based in Modderfontein is inviting applications for a Pharmacy Intern position within its Pharmacy Department. This role provides an opportunity for newly qualified pharmacy graduates to complete their internship in a structured healthcare environment while gaining practical experience in pharmaceutical services, patient care, and hospital pharmacy operations.

The Pharmacy Intern will work under the supervision of a registered pharmacist and will contribute to the safe, effective, and responsible provision of medication and related services to patients and internal stakeholders. Role Summary

The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting daily pharmacy operations while adhering to professional standards, hospital policies, and regulatory requirements. The role involves interacting with patients, healthcare professionals, and administrative teams to ensure that medication and supplementary pharmaceutical services are delivered accurately and efficiently.

The Pharmacy Intern is expected to demonstrate accountability, professionalism, and attention to detail while performing duties aligned with South African pharmacy legislation and institutional procedures.


Key Responsibilities

Under supervision, the Pharmacy Intern’s responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Assist with the dispensing and preparation of medication in accordance with prescriptions, hospital protocols, and regulatory standards

  • Support the provision of pharmaceutical care services to patients, ensuring accuracy, safety, and confidentiality

  • Engage with patients in a professional and respectful manner, providing basic medication-related information when required

  • Assist with stock management, including receiving, storing, and monitoring pharmaceutical products

  • Maintain accurate records and documentation in line with hospital and regulatory requirements

  • Support collaboration with doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to promote effective patient care

  • Adhere to ethical principles, professional standards, and internal policies at all times

  • Participate in operational activities that support the efficient functioning of the pharmacy department


Knowledge and Competencies

The ideal candidate should demonstrate or be willing to develop knowledge in the following areas:

  • Patient-focused customer service with a strong commitment to quality and safety

  • Understanding of hospital pharmacy operations and pharmaceutical care principles

  • Working knowledge of SAP systems or willingness to undergo training

  • Familiarity with Unisolve systems would be advantageous

  • Basic understanding of medical aid processes and billing environments (advantageous but not essential)

  • Awareness of pharmacy legislation and professional practice requirements

Minimum Requirements

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Pharmacy (B.Pharm) Degree, Diploma in Pharmacy (Dip. Pharm), or an equivalent NQF Level 7 qualification

Professional Registration

  • Current registration with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC) as a Pharmacy Intern or eligibility for such registration

Work Experience

  • No prior work experience is required, as this is an internship position
