About the Position

South African National Parks (SANParks) invites applications from suitably qualified individuals for the position of General Worker in the Conservation Department within the Garden Route National Park – Tsitsikamma Section. The successful candidate will report directly to the Sergeant Ranger and assist with a variety of conservation and maintenance duties.

This opportunity is ideal for individuals passionate about nature conservation, outdoor work, and protecting South Africa’s biodiversity.


Minimum Requirements

Applicants must meet the following essential criteria:

  • Education: Grade 12 certificate (Std 10) or equivalent.
  • Experience: 1–2 years of general worker experience, ideally in nature conservation work, such as alien clearing, integrated fire management, or law enforcement support.
  • Driver’s License: A valid driver’s license is required.
  • Occupational Health and Safety: Basic knowledge of OHS practices.
  • Physical Fitness: Must be physically fit to perform manual tasks in outdoor environments.
  • Maintenance Knowledge: Understanding of general maintenance and inspection tasks.
  • Hygiene Practices: Must maintain good hygiene standards.
  • Legislation Awareness: Knowledge of laws, policies, and procedures relevant to conservation work.
  • First Aid: Basic knowledge of First Aid.
  • Transport: Must have own transport to and from the workplace.
  • Availability: Willingness to perform standby duties on weekends and public holidays.

Additional Recommendations
  • Chainsaw and Brush Cutter Competencies.
  • Experience working with machinery, tools, and conservation equipment.

Key Responsibilities

As a General Worker, the successful applicant will assist with essential conservation and maintenance functions, including:

  • Performing physical conservation duties such as invasive plant removal, alien animal control, and soil erosion rehabilitation.
  • Supporting fire protection activities, including wildfire suppression, prescribed burning, and firebreak preparation.
  • Assisting with infrastructure maintenance — maintaining buildings, hiking trails, roads, signage, and gardens.
  • Conducting general maintenance and ensuring upkeep of staff villages and public areas.
  • Performing forestry-related duties and supporting environmental restoration initiatives.

About the Opportunity

SANParks is offering two EPWP Skilled Environmental Monitor positions at Groenkloof National Park Head Office. These roles are part of the national Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP), designed to create temporary work and skill development opportunities within the conservation sector.

Successful candidates will assist with cleaning, maintenance, and environmental monitoring tasks essential to the smooth operation of SANParks facilities.


Minimum Requirements
  • Education: Grade 12 (Matric).
  • Experience: 1–2 years of cleaning experience; stock-taking knowledge is advantageous.
  • Skills:
    • Basic First Aid and Occupational Health and Safety awareness.
    • Strong hygiene standards and attention to detail.
    • Ability to work under pressure and comply with OHS regulations.
    • Punctuality, neatness, and accountability.

Responsibilities
  • Clean and maintain offices, reception areas, ablutions, and open spaces daily.
  • Prepare meeting rooms and serve refreshments as needed.
  • Report maintenance issues or abnormalities promptly.
  • Manage lost property according to official procedures.
  • Empty bins and transport waste to designated collection areas.
  • Control cleaning materials and maintain inventory levels.
  • Ensure high cleaning standards and replenishment of consumables (e.g., toilet paper, soap).
  • Assist with stock-taking and issuing of supplies.
  • Support other ad hoc tasks as assigned by the supervisor.
