The City now invites interested and suitably qualified individuals to apply for temporary beach-season positions within the Department of Community Services for the December 2025 and January 2026 holiday period.
️ Casual Lifeguard (27 Posts)
Remuneration: R 757.40 per day worked (No overtime)
Location: Various municipal beaches
Minimum Requirements
- Valid Surf Lifesaving Certificate (essential).
- Current Lifeguard Award Retest (recent and valid).
- Prepared to work weekends and public holidays.
- Ability to supervise beachgoers and maintain public safety.
- Good communication and conflict-management skills.
- Must successfully complete the Council’s skills and fitness assessment.
Core Competencies
- First Aid Certification – ability to render emergency medical assistance.
- Surf Rescue Training – proficiency in advanced lifesaving techniques.
- Swimming proficiency and open-water rescue experience.
- Competence in using rescue boards and rescue tubes.
- Observation skills for identifying potential hazards.
- Accurate record-keeping of incidents, sea conditions, and rescues.
- Conflict resolution and communication skills for interacting with the public.
- Leadership and decision-making under pressure.
- Teamwork, customer service, and organizational skills.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain constant vigilance over public bathing areas.
- Perform lifesaving and first aid duties when required.
- Keep rescue equipment and craft in optimal condition.
- Broadcast safety information to beachgoers via the public-address system.
- Keep accurate daily records on sea conditions, bathers, equipment, and rescues.
- Participate in compulsory daily fitness and training sessions.
- Work weekends and public holidays as scheduled (no overtime pay).
Casual General Worker (22 Posts)
Remuneration: R 371.99 per day worked (No overtime)
Location: Municipal beaches and beachfront facilities
Minimum Requirements
- Grade 8 certificate or equivalent.
- Functional literacy and basic communication skills.
- Must be prepared to work on weekends and public holidays.
- Reliable and physically fit to perform manual labour.
Competency Requirements
- Cleaning and maintenance of public spaces and facilities.
- Manual labour skills including lifting, digging, and raking.
- Physical stamina for outdoor work.
- Teamwork and flexibility to handle diverse tasks.
- Basic communication to follow instructions accurately.
Key Responsibilities
- Keep beaches, car parks, and facilities clean and safe.
- Collect litter, sweep walkways, and maintain ablution facilities.
- Rake beach sand and assist with landscaping (weeding, pruning, trimming).
- Ensure all tools and equipment are clean and in working order.
- Assist supervisors and teams with other assigned tasks as required.
