As part of this commitment, Rand Water is seeking skilled and motivated individuals to join its team as Gardeners at the Johannesburg South Central Depot.
Job Summary
The Gardener role involves maintaining and developing Rand Water’s Environmental Management System (EMS) landscapes and facilities. The position requires hands-on, labour-intensive work that includes cleaning, planting, trimming, and general upkeep of outdoor areas using horticultural equipment, tools, and machinery.

Minimum Requirements
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet the following minimum criteria:
- Education: Grade 12 certificate or N3 qualification.
- Experience: At least 6 months’ experience in a similar environment.
- Skills and Competence:
- Ability to operate horticultural machinery such as brush cutters, lawnmowers, and knapsack sprayers.
- Basic understanding of plant care and landscape maintenance.
- Familiarity with safety standards and correct handling of garden tools and equipment.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
The Gardener will perform a variety of tasks related to the care, maintenance, and improvement of Rand Water’s outdoor and landscaped areas, including:
- Conducting general site maintenance of landscaped areas and facilities.
- Performing routine cleaning, sweeping, watering, and planting activities.
- Applying fertilizers, composts, and mulches to maintain healthy plant growth.
- Cutting grass, trimming edges, and maintaining lawn areas within Bulk Water Distribution reservoir sites and servitudes.
- Loading and offloading materials, tools, plants, and debris as required.
- Supporting the team with decorative setups for events or special functions when needed.
- Ensuring all horticultural machinery and tools are cleaned, maintained, and safely stored after use.
- Following all occupational health and safety regulations to maintain a safe and productive work environment.
- Carrying out any other duties as instructed by supervisors or management in support of operational needs.
Knowledge and Competencies
The successful candidate should demonstrate sound knowledge and understanding of:
- Proper use and maintenance of hand tools and gardening machinery.
- Operation of lawnmowers, brush cutters, and related horticultural equipment.
- Basic knowledge of plants, soil, and garden maintenance techniques.
- Awareness of environmental safety practices and proper waste disposal methods.
