Purpose of the Role

The Learner Artisan: Millwright role is an apprenticeship position designed to train and develop candidates to become qualified Millwright artisans. Training is conducted in line with the requirements of the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO), relevant SETA standards, and the National Artisan Moderation Body (NAMB). Successful learners will gain both theoretical knowledge and practical workplace experience.

Key Responsibilities and Learning Areas

Learners in this role will be exposed to a wide range of technical and operational activities, including:

  • Developing competence in plant, mine, and equipment maintenance relevant to the discipline
  • Understanding and using plant maintenance documentation and work management systems
  • Gaining basic process knowledge specific to the assigned plant or mining environment
  • Complying with safety management systems such as IMS and MBO
  • Participating in hazard identification, task risk assessments, and emergency procedures
  • Attending daily meetings to discuss work assignments and priorities
  • Providing progress feedback to supervisors and planning officers
  • Participating in root cause analyses (RCA) and safety discussions
  • Maintaining good housekeeping standards and proper waste disposal practices
  • Supporting continuous improvement initiatives related to plant safety and reliability

Learners are also expected to work effectively within teams, contribute to toolbox talks, and participate in performance appraisals to support personal and professional development.

Training, Development, and Growth

Sasol places strong focus on structured development. Learners are encouraged to identify personal training needs and incorporate them into a Personal Development Plan (PDP) with guidance from group leaders. Over time, learners may be required to assist with work instruction development, lead small team tasks, and contribute ideas to maintenance strategies. Acting in a leadership capacity may be possible depending on individual progress and career path.

Minimum Educational Requirements

Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Completed Matric or N3 qualification (or equivalent)
  • Passes in:
    • Mathematics
    • Physical Science
    • English

Candidates with 0 to 1 year of relevant experience may apply. Prior work experience is not mandatory, making this opportunity suitable for school leavers or entry-level applicants who meet the academic criteria.
