Position Overview
The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) invites applications for By-Election Staff (Various Positions) to support upcoming by-elections across all provinces in South Africa. These positions are offered on a short-term election contract basis and play a critical role in ensuring that elections are conducted in a free, fair, and credible manner.
Successful applicants will be deployed at municipal offices and voting stations within their local areas and will assist with voter registration, electoral administration, and operational support during the by-election period.
Provinces and Locations
This opportunity is available nationwide across the following provinces:
- Eastern Cape
- Free State
- Gauteng
- KwaZulu-Natal
- Limpopo
- Mpumalanga
- Northern Cape
- North West
- Western Cape
Applicants are encouraged to apply within the province and municipality where they currently reside, as local placement is preferred to support effective service delivery.
Job Purpose
The primary purpose of the By-Election Staff role is to contribute towards strengthening South Africa’s democratic processes by assisting with the coordination and implementation of voter registration, voting activities, and related electoral programmes at voting station level.
Key Responsibilities
Depending on the specific position allocated, duties may include:
- Assisting with voter registration and verification processes
- Supporting voting station operations during by-elections
- Providing administrative and logistical support
- Assisting voters with election-related procedures
- Ensuring compliance with IEC policies and procedures
- Supporting the integrity, transparency, and efficiency of the electoral process
Important Notes for Applicants
- Applicants must not have a high party-political profile
- Applicants must not have held political office or been a political party candidate in the past five (5) years
- Applicants must not be candidates for any political party in the upcoming by-elections
- The IEC reserves the right not to fill any position
- Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted
Minimum Requirements and Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must meet all of the following requirements:
- Must be a South African citizen
- Must be a registered voter
- Must have Matric (Grade 12)
- Must have at least five (5) years’ professional, supervisory, or administrative work experience
- Must not have been convicted of a serious criminal offence
- Must have access to a mobile phone
- Must be able to operate smartphone technology and assist others where required
- Must reside in the area applied for
- Must be proficient in the main language(s) spoken in the area
- Must be willing to attend mandatory training (virtual and/or face-to-face)
- Must have a valid bank account
- Must be registered with SARS and have a valid tax reference number
Application Documentation (Mandatory)
All applications must include the following documents:
- An updated and comprehensive CV
- Certified copies of all qualification certificates
- A certified copy of a South African ID document
- A certified copy of a driver’s licence (where required)
Applicants with foreign qualifications must submit a SAQA evaluation certificate.
Failure to submit all required documents will result in the application not being considered.
Screening and Verification
Recommended candidates will undergo risk assessments, which may include:
- Verification of CV and work experience
- Qualification verification
- Criminal record checks
- Credit checks
Appointments will only be made upon successful verification of all requirements.
Employment Conditions
- Positions are offered on a short-term election contract basis
- Permanent employees (where applicable) will be subject to a 12-month probation period
- Successful candidates may be required to sign performance contracts
- The IEC reserves the right to withdraw, re-advertise, or fill positions through transfer or deployment
