Job Description

Qualifications, experience and other competencies required:

  • Minimum Grade 10
  • Grade C/B/A accredited and registered
  • Hospitality/Residential Estates experience is a MUST
  • Minimum of 2 years in the security industry
  • No criminal record
  • Willing to undergo criminal checks regularly
  • Must be physically fit
  • Must reside in the area the position has been advertised

Key areas of responsibility will include:

  • Report writing
  • Safeguarding
  • Patrolling
  • Entrance and exit control
  • Completing relevant registers
  • Standard duties as per training

Core Competencies:

  • Good communication skills
  • Able to work under pressure
  • Able to follow instructions accurately

In South Africa, Security Officer Grades C, B, and A refer to different levels of responsibility and authority within the private security industry. These grades are regulated by PSIRA (Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority). Here’s a breakdown of each grade:

Grade C Security Officer

  • Primary Role: Access control officer.
  • Typical Duties:
    • Controlling access to premises.
    • Checking ID cards, visitor logs, and entry/exit points.
    • Patrolling premises (light patrol duties).
    • Basic report writing.
  • Level of Responsibility: Entry-level.
  • Common Work Environments: Retail stores, warehouses, office parks, residential complexes.

Grade B Security Officer

  • Primary Role: Supervisor of Grade C officers.
  • Typical Duties:
    • Supervising a team of Grade C guards.
    • Handling minor incidents and escalations.
    • Scheduling and rostering guards.
    • Doing basic investigations and reporting.
    • Liaising with clients or site managers.
  • Level of Responsibility: Intermediate.
  • Common Work Environments: Shopping malls, schools, medium-size business premises.

Grade A Security Officer

  • Primary Role: Site or shift commander.
  • Typical Duties:
    • Managing and overseeing site operations.
    • Supervising both Grade B and C officers.
    • Conducting in-depth investigations and writing detailed reports.
    • Handling emergencies and liaising with police or emergency services.
    • Implementing and maintaining security policies and procedures.
  • Level of Responsibility: Senior / Management level.
  • Common Work Environments: High-risk sites, corporate offices, banks, industrial plants.

Additional Info:

  • Training & Certification:
    • All security officers must be registered with PSIRA.
    • Training must be completed through an accredited training provider.
    • Grade C is the starting point, and officers may upgrade to B or A through additional training and experience.
  • PSIRA Registration Requirements:
    • South African ID.
    • No criminal record.
    • Completed training for the desired grade.
    • Fingerprint clearance.
  • Pay:
    • Varies by employer and site risk level.
    • Generally:
      • Grade C: Lowest pay.
      • Grade B: Moderate.
      • Grade A: Highest pay due to more responsibility.
