Job Description

RCL Foods is looking for a hardworking, energetic, and fleet-focused Mechanic Assistant to join their baking business unit in Durban. This is a permanent opportunity for someone interested in vehicle maintenance, transport operations, and workshop support.

The successful candidate will assist with maintenance and preventative servicing according to the maintenance schedule. They will also help with vehicle breakdowns and attend to after-hours breakdowns involving the local delivery fleet. The position reports directly to the Transport Manager.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working with trucks, tools, and engines, and who wants to grow within the mechanical and transport industry.

Minimum Requirements

Education and Qualifications

  • Grade 12 / Matric certificate
  • Diesel Mechanic Qualification will be an advantage

Experience

  • 2 to 3 years’ experience in an FMCG workshop environment
  • Experience with FAW, Fuso, Hino, and Nissan trucks is advantageous

Duties and Responsibilities

Fleet Maintenance

  • Keep the workshop clean and tidy at all times
  • Maintain housekeeping according to HSEMS standards
  • Dispose of waste in designated areas correctly
  • Follow instructions from the lead mechanic
  • Assist the lead mechanic when needed
  • Perform duties assigned by mechanics safely and efficiently
  • Help with vehicle servicing and repairs
  • Attend breakdowns when required
  • Assist with preventative maintenance schedules
  • Ensure vehicles are roadworthy and functional

Equipment Handling

  • Use workshop tools correctly
  • Handle mechanical and electronic gauges carefully
  • Prevent equipment damage and failures
  • Keep tools stored safely after use

Safety and Compliance

  • Carry out all duties safely
  • Follow company procedures and rules
  • Wear PPE where required
  • Maintain a safe working environment
  • Report hazards immediately

General Responsibilities
