Introduction

Eskom is inviting qualified candidates to apply for the Learner Hospitality Programme (X5 positions) at the Eskom Academy of Learning in Midrand. This opportunity is designed for individuals who have completed a hospitality or catering-related qualification and are seeking valuable workplace experience in a structured learning environment.

The programme runs for 24 months and aims to provide practical exposure to kitchen operations, food preparation, stock management, customer service, and hospitality administration. Participants will work closely with experienced culinary and hospitality professionals, including the Executive Chef, to gain hands-on experience that supports professional development within the hospitality and catering industry.

This learner programme is ideal for recent graduates who want to strengthen their practical skills, understand professional kitchen standards, and build a solid foundation for a career in catering management, hotel services, or hospitality operations.


Programme Overview

The Learner Hospitality Programme combines practical training and workplace exposure within the hospitality services unit. Learners will support daily catering activities and assist in maintaining high standards of service, hygiene, and operational efficiency.

The programme focuses on developing the following competencies:

  • Professional food preparation techniques
  • Kitchen management support
  • Customer service in hospitality environments
  • Administrative and stock control processes
  • Health, safety, and hygiene standards in food service

By the end of the programme, learners are expected to gain practical knowledge and workplace confidence that can help them pursue opportunities in the broader hospitality and tourism sector.


Key Responsibilities

Learners selected for this programme will assist with various operational tasks within the hospitality department. Responsibilities may include the following:

Food Preparation and Kitchen Support
  • Assist with preparing and producing meals in accordance with kitchen standards.
  • Support the Executive Chef and kitchen team during daily catering operations.
  • Ensure ingredients are prepared and stored according to food safety guidelines.
  • Participate in maintaining kitchen cleanliness and organisation.
Stock Control and Inventory Support
  • Help monitor food supplies and kitchen inventory.
  • Assist in stock rotation and storage procedures to maintain freshness and quality.
  • Support basic inventory record keeping where required.
Administrative Duties
  • Perform hospitality-related administrative tasks when required.
  • Assist with documentation and processes aligned with operational standards.
  • Support compliance with relevant International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) procedures used within the department.
Customer Service
  • Provide courteous and professional service during catering or hospitality events.
  • Assist with serving food and beverages where applicable.
  • Help maintain a positive dining experience for guests and staff.
Health and Safety Compliance
  • Follow established workplace health and safety procedures.
  • Maintain hygiene standards in line with food safety regulations.
  • Ensure that kitchen workspaces remain clean, organised, and safe at all times.

Minimum Requirements

To be considered for this learner opportunity, applicants must meet the following requirements:

Qualifications

Applicants must have completed one of the following qualifications at NQF Level 6 with 240 credits:

  • National Diploma in Catering Management
  • National N Diploma in Hospitality and Catering Services
  • Hotel School Qualification or equivalent hospitality-related qualification

Experience

  • No previous work experience is required.
